| At
the moment there are about seven hundred Chows in Estonia.
Approximately hundred puppies are born each year. There are eightteen kennels or breeders of Chows. The Chow is among the top ten popular breeds. Because of the sudden increase in the Chow population several health problems have become apparent. Allergies, different eye diseases and skeletal troubles being the most prevalent. To improve the quality of breeding and help with the welfare of the breed the Estonian Chow Chow Club was founded. Inga Põder, Toomas Kask, Svtelana Artjomova, Inge Soodla, Piret Lõoke and Marge Pärnits took the initiative to start a club in 2005. Several Chow owners spend time educating children how to behave towards dogs. Dogs are taken to schools, kindergartens and children’s homes, where they are told how a dog is acquired, how to care for it and, for instance more importantly, how to cope when meeting a strange dog. Children welcome these events, ask many questions and, of course, want to touch all the dogs. They learn about the behaviour of dogs and how they themselves should behave towards dogs. The sessions also benefit these aloof Chow Chows, since these meetings with children train the dog to communicate with strangers.
